Management of Sensory Issues and Motor Dysfunction in Neurodevelopmental Disorders

ASD Welfare Trust Lahore organized a hands-on training workshop on “Management of Sensory issues and Motor Dysfunction in Neurodevelopment disorders”. Dr. Husna Albab discussed sensory behaviors and motor problems faced by children with neurodevelopmental disorders. During her presentation, she talked about sensory protocols, the importance of sensory circuiting, movement breaks, and strategies from Sensory Integration Therapy. The presentation was followed by a hands-on session where parents were taught about the appropriate use of toys and activities.
Yoga Session for Mothers

ASDWT Lahore organized a free yoga session for mothers of children with neurodiversity to relieve day-to-day stress. Yoga Instructor, Ms. Gulerana Mubashar (CEO of Ranai Wellness Club, Lahore) demonstrated different yoga steps, meditation and breathing exercises to the participants. It was a fun activity which everyone enjoyed.
Team ASDWT is very grateful to Ms. Gulerana for volunteering her valuable time and expertise for this activity.
Autism Zoom Session with Lawyers

ASD Welfare Trust Lahore organized a zoom session for Lawyers on "Autism, ADHD, Conduct Disorder, and Juvenile Delinquency".A presentation was given by Rukhsana Shah, CEO of the Trust, in which she explained different Neurodevelopmental Disorders and said that the judicial system needs to recognize these Persons so that they can get due consideration and a fair trial. She also talked about Disability Laws in Punjab and Sindh, and pointed out that at present, there were no provisions in the Juvenile Delinquency Act, PPC, Prison Manual and others for Neurodiverse Persons. The presentation was followed by a Q&A session. ASDWT is grateful to Ms. Nida Usman Chaudhary (Founder of Lahore Education & Research Network and Women in Law Initiative Pakistan) for providing this platform. ASDWT plans to conduct more awareness sessions on this topic.
Learning Profile of Individuals with ASD & ADHD

Moms Retreat ASDWT Lahore

The ASDWT Lahore team organised a refreshing activity for mothers of children with neurodiversity. Mothers chatted with each other and made friends. Yoga expert, Ms. Gulerana Mubashar gave a demonstration on basic Yoga exercises and tips to relieve daily stress. Musicians Nazar Abbas and Mohsin Darbhuka (Sultans Band) played various songs and the guests enjoyed the music. This was followed by a cake cutting ceremony and refreshments. Mothers have especially requested for another get-together which will be announced soon.

A workshop was conducted by ASDWT-Lahore at Headway Institute for Learning for parents and teachers. Presenter Ms. Munazza Saeed (Clinical Psychologist) talked about different Neurodevelopmental Disorders and management techniques appropriate for children with special needs. She also explained how different parenting styles affect outcomes. In the same training session, Dr. Husna Iftikhar Ahmed (Physiotherapist) stressed that many behavior issues in persons with Autism were due to poor sensory integration and processing issues. She gave a brief explanation on sensory integration therapy and accommodations to help children improve their behaviors.

On December 5th, 22 Team ASDWT conducted a workshop on “Stress Management” at Bank Alfalah Head office. Stressors faced by Bank employees on daily basis were identified and discussed.
Different Management Techniques to cope stress were discussed and practiced in the session. Participants left the session with a sense of relaxation and felt empowered by gaining the knowledge and control over the triggers.

Mental Health Perspective in an Evolving Culture

In the celebration of Mental health month, Team ASDWT Karachi arranged a Facebook live session on October 21st with Professor Dr. Qudsia Tariq of the Institute of Behaviour Sciences, University of Karachi.
Dr. Qudsia talked about over-use of social media and mobile phones in the country that posed a threat to mental well-being. However, she noted that there was also increased awareness about mental health in Pakistan and growing acceptance of mental illnesses. She discussed different strategies for individuals and the community to build a healthier and happier society.

PSMG in collaboration with ASDWT conducted a session on genetic research with regard to Autism. Dr. Salma Khalil introduced the vision, mission and work of the ASDWT with a slide presentation, while Ms. Faiza Ilyas gave a detailed presentation on Diagnosis, Screening and Management of ASD. Ms. Kristyn Rawson talked about the current research being done by the PSMG in genetic disorders to determine the possible causes of Autism. Ms. Rukhsana Shah talked about her own experience as a parent and advocate. The Q&A session covered many different issues such as exposure to heavy metals, pesticides and processed food as possible causes of Autism apart from genetic factors which were at the moment inconclusive. The session was attended by participants from across the world.

On October 2, 2021, ASDWT Karachi invited Ms. Neena Wagh, Founder Director ALLAP in India for a Zoom session on Independent Living. Neena is a writer and activist, and also parent of a young man with autism. In her talk, she said that a mother is the nucleus of the family, but the lack of empowerment of women in our society undermined their confidence and ability to provide a nurturing environment to their children with autism. She emphasised the need for women to become aware of their crucial role in providing emotional and social support to their autistic children and adults to enable them to live independent and fulfilled lives.

ASDWT Lahore arranged a free Zoom session on Sign Language for Autism conducted by Mrs. Nusrat Rashid, a sign language teacher and former Principal RISE, Lahore. She said that it is important to teach different kinds of communication skills that seek to reduce problematic behaviours in persons with autism. Sign Language can help social and learning skills, and improve their behaviours as they would have an alternate way to make themselves understood and heard. 75 participants attended the session and asked several questions. Participants al-so requested that the session to be held again as they took keen interest in learning sign language for teaching the same to their children.

Apart from ASDWT teams at Lahore, and Karachi, a few specialists were alsoinvited to give lectures on specific topics such as Occupational Therapy, Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome and Music Therapy.

ASDWT conducted an online meeting with NGO Power 99 Foundation to discuss Assisted Living Facility options for Adults with ASD. The main speaker was Ms. Anila Ansari who is based in Scotland but is keen to develop residential facility for adults with autism in Haripur. Many parents showed interest in the Project and it was decided that Ms. Anila Ansari would develop a blue print by September 30th, 2021, and share it with parents through another Zoom meeting organised by the ASDWT.
Light in the Music

ASDWT Lahore organized a webinar on “Light in the Music” conducted by Mr. Sohail Khan, Music Educationist and Therapist, CMT (London), BMGIM Advance Level (USA). He is a pioneer in introducing Music Therapy in Pakistan. In his presentation he said that music therapy is an interpersonal process in which the therapist uses music and all its facets - physical, emotional, mental, social, aesthetic, and spiritual - to help children with special needs achieve nonmusical goals. Mr. Sohail Khan has trained a batch of Music Therapists belonging to different parts of the country and they can this therapy upon request.
